We have an elf on the shelf and if my stepmom were still alive, we would probably have to do it since she bought it for us, but DH and I find the idea of "Be good or the creepy, spying elf will report you to Santa" to be off putting.

We have Cherry the elf. I do not encourage the troublemaker elves, b/c what's the point of an elf if he himself is causing trouble? And, as much as some of the Pinterest ideas seem like fun, I can barely remember to move the darn thing. He does kind of creep me out too. Shifty eyes and all. Has anyone seen Joy's? That is a creepy elf!Mine is decades old. He was my parents....he was always on our tree or hanging around the house somewhere (my mom was Elf on the shelfing before it was a thing!). We had two...my twin sister has the other one as we are the only 2 left from our "nuclear" family of 5 still living. (My other siblings are 1/2 siblings and were all grown and out of the house when I was a kid). One of my nieces (of a sister I don't particularly have a damn thing in common) started a little FB war about it yesterday. She called it the dumbest thing ever. She pissed me off. First Christmas without my mom and my sister is hard enough but she deliberately insulted one of our traditions and she should have known better. Then my biotch sister defended her. Whatevs. My kids are doing elf for me this year which makes me happy...they rotate days and try to outdo each other. I appreciate that they are putting in the effort for me since they know it makes me giggle. He looked like he had been around for a few Christmases. <3 I was wondering if I should post that or not. I hope I didn't upset you. What a bitch!! Did you block her or anything after that? What did you say/do? I'm sorry you and your sister have to celebrate without your Mom this year, Joy. That just breaks my heart. But your kids are so amazing, I'm really glad that they can help fill you with the holiday spirit. You have raised them right <3 <3

That just breaks my heart. But your kids are so amazing, I'm really glad that they can help fill you with the holiday spirit. You have raised them right <3 <3 Here's how it ran down: She said: I'm sorry but Elf on the Shelf is the dumbest thing ever. You make a mess tell your kids the ELF did it, they look at it for 5 minutes. Then you have to clean your mess that this so called "ELF" made up. Guys if you want tradition just make some gingerbread cookies and stick to the Christmas pickle. Someone else said: It's suppose to be cute and for young kids because the elf is suppose to be watching the kids for Santa so if they aren't good they don't get presents. And it doesn't require making a mess that's if you chose to make one. A ginger bread house makes more of a mess ya grinch. Lol I said: Finger painting, play-doh, gingerbread houses, baking cookies are all kid activities that make a mess, but they also make memories. I'm sure you and mom did stuff when you were little that made a mess but was still darn fun Someone else said: Trust me if you were that kid still left with loads of mystery in your head the elf on the shelf would be the coolest darn thing. What about the tooth fairy, Easter bunny, Santa and so forth? She said: I never believed in the Easter bunny, Santa or the tooth fairy. My family works very hard for our money and so our parents want us to know where our gifts and so forth come from. This post was not meant to be taken this serious Then my sister (her mother) jumps in and says: I concur with McK. I knew that maybe some would take offense to it. Everyone has their traditions. If your tradition is to take the polar plunge have at it. I just let people do whatever. I don't pay your bills and u don't answer to me. But although there is fun with Santa and so on, I wanted my daughter that her gifts came from hard work. I gave her a dollar amount I would spend and she would decide what she wanted. So I ended with: Everyone has their traditions...some of them are just the dumbest thing ever My kids knew exactly how much work went into putting gifts under the tree too (still do even though they are adults) doesn't mean we can't have a little fun about it. Still <3 you both, just disagree about this The little drama queen later posted: I'm just so over everything Christmas is so not worth the drama. I'm ready for Christmas to come and go...... She's a freshman in college. So bitter and spoiled. I love her but blech with her attitude!

Sounds kind of ignorant to me. Let's chalk it up to being young and immature? Maybe she's going through some crap and it's making it hard for her to get in the spirit?

Nope she's just a snot (I'd use the b word if she wasn't my niece). Few years ago she linked to a news story about a 98 yo woman getting her HS diploma and how ridiculous that was. They are just different than most in my family (long story short her mom was put up for adoption and raised by some very controlling, uber Republican, uber "Christian" >cough< (because they should actually read their bibles the judgemental creeps that they are). So that situation just is what it is.

Ahhhh. So not Christine's DD? No, my sister Traci - she lives in Florida. And we've never actually met. How's that for crazy family stuff?

I know someone who has a sibling that has kind of been outcasted from his family b/c he is the product of his mom being raped by her brother. It's a real backwoods kinda family. It's very sad, and sadly very true.

See now again it's nice to know my family isn't the only family that's a little...different.
