I wanted to because I found my mom's turkey shaped cookie cutter that was her moms. I am thinking about trying to make cookies for Thanksgiving.

I like americolor food coloring--I buy it at HL using 40% off coupons--but wilton works okay too and you can buy a set of colors at HL/MIkes/Joanns pretty cheap with a 40% off Q
If you want the no fail recipe--search no fail sugar cookie recipe it will come up. I use the Wilton roll out cookie dough recipe-but I use almond flavored extract. It is the recipe that I had used for years for fun with my kids before I even started making cookies for others. It is a firmer shortbread like cookie that is "sturdy"
I ice with glaze (Mary uses Royal Icing--the wilton recipe right on the can of meringue powder can, with some minor tweaks) My icing is 1 bag powder sugar, 1/2 cup corn syrup and 1/2 cup water (I would start with a little less then 1/2 cup) and then 1 Tablespoon extract Mine take longer to dry but have a softer bite to the icing-one huge plus of royal icing is quick dry time

I was watching some videos that CM posted on FB then I saw this one and I was in a trance. So cute and somewhat hopefully easy to make: I made kinda similar reindeers last year--quick and easy How do you make that carmel color? Do you use brown just a tiny bit with your sugar mixture?

americolor has ( and I am guessing wilton does as well) different shades of brown coloring
that caramel color could be made with warm brown with some white added to it--or even from Ivory
americolor gel food colorings ( nice dropper bottles , intense colors) are 1.79 at HL

I look at these and wonder if "natural" food colouring exists. I know that I have given away much of my cookie making supplies that contain corn, but I think I could find an appropriate gingerbread recipe and I have those cutters.
I haven't searched yet, but do the colours you have list ingredients or just the chemical name?
Hmm, I found naturally coloured suckers at Whole Foods at Halloween - should check there.

i'm sorry, Fuzzy... when you asked that over on FB, i thought it was some great trick they used in the video , but i hadn't watched it yet, so i didn't know I buy almost strictly the Wilton color pastes, which are way more limited than Americolor... mostly cause michaels and joann are so close to my house and HL not so much... (except of course for that awesome red food color @jschwemi got me from that Amish store in Arthur ♥♥♥ ) If you're using Wilton pastes, there's only the one BROWN color choice... just add a small amount to your icing... and more and more until you get the caramel color you want.

No HL near me so the brown will have to do.

there are natural food dyes, many cake and cookie people have done testing --because it is not of interest to me I dont exactly remember the results--but some color families are way better then others

Rearding the icing recipe, u say one bag powdered sugar. I am assuming that means a 1 lb bag?
